I always plan to arrive on time but if for any reason I am delayed, I will try to call you to let you know; I hate being late for any appointment!
On arrival I will look at your chimney stack to make sure it is sound and can be swept through.
On entering your property, I will remove my shoes (clean socks every day) and place a new sheet in front of your fire to inspect the flue/appliance and determine what equipment I need to bring indoors.
For an open fire, I will screen off the opening and sweep through the screen with appropriate rods and brushes ensuring that the soot falls down behind the screen. Once the chimney has been swept, I will remove the screen and vacuum up the soot with my industrial cleaner.
Multi-fuel and Wood-burning stoves generally have a baffle plate which needs to be removed before they can be swept. They are then swept through the stove or through an access hatch depending on the flue type. At all times I will take care to ensure that there is very little risk of soot entering the room.
On completion I will smoke test your flue to make sure it works as it should. I will then remove all equipment from the room and ensure that you are happy with my work before issuing you with a report and certificate.

Insurance companies are increasingly asking for evidence that a chimney has been swept by a competent and professional individual. Some insurance companies will no longer pay out for chimney fire damage unless the flue has been swept and maintained by a Professional Chimney Sweep who can issue a valid certificate of sweeping recognised by the insurance companies themselves. ICS Chimney Sweeps are required to issue these certificates for every chimney that they sweep.

Industry recommendations are:

Smokeless Coals - at least once a year (often believed to not need sweeping!)
Wood - once a year when in use on open fires, twice a year when used in stoves
Bitumous Coal - twice a year
Oil - once a year
Gas - once a year
